about the crafts

the crafts
Within our works the crafts have usually been seen in relation to the four Disciplines that were taught at various times by the School of Silo. In this regard, they are framed primarily as preparatory works for those entering into those more complex works of self-transformation. But however the case may be, the Crafts are meant to educate a three-fold sensibility of permanence, carefulness, and proportion. They help one to learn how to do things in a balanced way, while at the same time resolving what appear to be external problems of accuracy and detail. That is, thanks to the "external" work in the crafts we can produce important "internal" changes in our attitudes and approaches. Of course, the crafts can also be an important and deep source of inspiration and insight.

the craft of fire
The Craft work that we are carrying out deals with fire, heat (kilns), and substances that are transformed: ceramics, metal and glass. We go from recreating the origins of the human being's domestication of fire, all the way up to forging iron and blowing glass. We're doing all right so far working in my backyard, basement, city parks, etc. but eventually we'll need a bigger workshop space. Normally, the Crafts are carried out in Parks of Study and Reflection, like the one in Hudson Valley, NY.
